As a result of needing a C-section, our hospital stay was extended until Tuesday. Luckily for Bruce, the bed in the maternity room was an actual cot not one of those convertible chair-beds. We spent 4 nights and 3 ½ days at the hospital recovering and figuring out how to take care of Evan. Neither Bruce nor I had had much experience with newborns prior to Evan but we seemed to figure things out pretty quickly. Especially Bruce, as much of Evan’s care was his responsibility for the first couple of days due to my limited mobility. Bruce, as I knew he would, fell quite naturally into the role of Daddy and was changing diapers and feeding Evan as if he had been doing it for years. I think it certainly helped that Evan was so good and relatively easy to take care of!
On Saturday, I was in quite a bit of pain and wasn’t feeling up to having many visitors so I asked my parents to let everyone know that we would prefer people wait until Sunday to visit. We did get a visit from Uncle Dan and Aunt Karin, who were so excited to meet their first “official” nephew and also from Gramma and Papa. Also, thanks to technology, Evan was able to meet Omi and Grandpa Bob who were at home in Washington State .

Sunday was Mother’s Day and I had a wonderful day with Evan. After feeding him in the morning, he took a long nap in my arms. He was quite alert at other times throughout the day and I explained to him that nothing could ever top this Mother’s day! He set the bar quite high and I know that each Mother’s day will be special as I will always remember becoming a family of three just two days before my first Mother’s day. In the evening, while I was holding Evan, he picked up his head, turned towards me and gave me a look that just melted my heart. It was then that I truly knew just how much I already loved our little man!
On Sunday afternoon, Bumpa, Aunt Chris, Uncle Glenn, Aunt Chris and Uncle Bob all came to meet our special man. We also video conferenced with Aunt Kristina, Uncle Ty and Cousin Hannah. Hannah seemed excited to meet Evan and kept saying “Baby, baby.” It was rather cute! We also received many congratulatory phone calls, text messages and emails. It is wonderful to know that we have so much support and that Evan is so loved already!!
